“Scrapbooked” is the opposite of cold, factual, and boring. The target, the goal, of scrapbooked writing is warmth, insight, and personality.
Scrapbooking photographs became a joy and a stress reliever for me several years ago. I still like to walk into a craft store like Michaels and browse the scrapbook paper section. Scrapbooking lets you put your personality onto paper, to “decorate” your pictures with colored or patterned papers and with embellishments, such as snowflake stickers for winter scenes or hearts for Valentine’s Day. And don’t forget the bling—rhinestones and all things that sparkle. Bling is awesome.
Just like people scrapbook their photographs to preserve their memories in a special way, writers can scrapbook their message so it’s memorable to their readers. When we write about Scripture, our objective is to take the message of God’s Word and deliver it with warmth, insight, and personality. Our mission is to make our writing as “reader friendly” as possible. We scrapbook.
Our background paper is the background information we discover about a passage, helping us to understand what the passage meant to its original readers. We can write about the cultural customs of Bible times and idioms found in the Biblical languages. The context of the passage helps our readers to have a better understanding of the framework in which our passage was written or spoken.
As we write, we add stories or illustrations for embellishments and spiritual insights for the “bling.” What sparkling insight or meaningful application has God given you about the passage you’re writing about? Pass that along to your readers, and you add a “wow” factor to your writing. Taking the time to make our writing as reader friendly as possible will not only keep our readers engaged, but help them to understand and apply God’s Word better.
Are you ready to “scrapbook”? See the writing process in a new light, and dive into the glorious truths, promises, and stories that God has preserved for us in His Word. Remember to scrapbook as you write, and create a work of art that will find its home in your readers’ minds and hearts.
Will you join me? At FCWC 2018, I will be teaching a workshop called “How to Make Scripture Come Alive in Your Writing.” Scrapbooking your message is just one of the ten tips I’ll be sharing. Whether you write devotions, Bible-related articles, Christian living books, or Bible studies, this workshop will give you ten tips that will enhance your writing and bring out the richness of God’s Word.
I hope to see you in February, and until then, I hope you do some scrapbooking!
