Will I Ever Be Published?

By Linda S. Glaz

As an agent, I hear these frustrations often:

  • I had a great idea, took notes, did an outline, and wrote a wonderful novel.  Why is it that I can’t get my foot in the proverbial door and get published?
  • A writer friend said to get an agent. Being a hard worker, I wrote a quick note and told them how good the book is, how my mom loves it, and how my writer friend is sure it will be a bestseller. I was sure after sending it to all twenty agents I’d heard about that the letter would snag me a dozen or more agents to choose from. All I got was one rejection after another. Why don’t they like me?
  • Another friend said to go to a conference. Now, there wasn’t a local one that did romance, but I figured: a book’s a book, right? So I went to the sci-fi conference. I learned nothing. Absolutely nothing! Where did I go wrong?
  • My cousin reads at least two hundred books a year. And all in my…what’s it called?...category? Genre? Something like that. Anyway, she’s like—an expert. She loves my story. Said it could use a bit of help in the grammar department, but that’s what my agent and editor are for, right?
  • What am I doing wrong? I’ve been at this for ten years. I know it’s good. Great, even. But no one seems to want my novel.

Anyone who writes has got to believe in their own work, but they also need: thick skin, a teachable spirit, and some knowledge of the industry, the more the better.

Writing the novel is not THE END; it’s just the beginning.

You can do this if you do it the right way.

  1. First, write the novel. Understand writing trends in the industry. Trends change through the years, don’t be left behind because you haven’t researched the market.
  2. Read in the genre that you are writing. Read current bestsellers in your genre.
  3. Find critique partners through organizations, conferences, or from local writers groups. You’ll learn how to fine tune your work until it pops!
  4. Know that the first page of your novel needs to draw the reader in. You don’t get many pages to persuade an agent/editor to take your work.
  5. Research agents through their agency sites. KNOW what they want before you send a letter, proposal, or full work to them. And follow their guidelines to the letter…no pun intended.
  6. Attend conferences that are geared to your genre. It is a wise investment.
  7. Join organizations that cater to your style of writing. If you write nonfiction, don’t join a fiction organization. If you write erotica, don’t join a Christian writers’ group. And so on.
  8. Take as many online classes as you can find. Most organizations have free classes that come with your membership. Money WELL spent.

YOU CAN DO THIS.

But it’s a bit more than just sitting down and writing a book that your mom or cousin loves.

Linda Glaz is a multi-published author in historic romance and romantic suspense. She’s a literary agent with Hartline Literary Agency and loves finding new treasures, especially in fiction. She speaks/teaches nationwide. Linda is married with three children and three grandchildren. As a theatre nut, she loves working with costumes and musical theatre. She’s had an awesome life thus far serving in the Air Force, teaching women’s defense, and refereeing and teaching soccer nationally. She agrees with George Bailey, It’s a Wonderful Life!

Workshop Presented by Linda:

He said. She said. Oh, my!
A funny look into the mistakes writers make when writing the opposite gender in their novels. Did he really call that Chartreuse? Did she really say, Dude! How’s it hangin’?
Laugh your way into learning the difference between male and female POV and how to write it correctly.
