5 Reasons to Launch a Blog
1/16/2016 12:00:01 AM by: Andy Lee

by, Andy Lee

I just jumped.

It was a moment of insanity. I climbed the paratrooper training tower. My soldier-husband’s Kevlar helmet wobbled on my head. The heavy flak vest hung to my knees.

As I climbed the ladder, doing what many Army spouses dared to do at the annual Ft. Bragg Family Day, I began to entertain second thoughts. But I’d been trained—for five minutes. I knew what to do. How hard could it be? I’d given birth to two children.

As I neared the opening of the tower that simulated the door of a plane, I tried to follow protocol: Chin on chest. Body straight.

I closed my eyes and began the count. (Not protocol.)

1….2….3…

And I jumped.

Maybe I shouldn’t have closed my eyes. My form was less than perfect and caused my body to bounce down the zip-line. With every bounce, metal clips attaching me to the line slapped my face. First the right cheek, then the left.

Bounce.

Smack.

Bounce.

Smack.

All. The. Way. Down.

The end of the line caused an abrupt stop; my body flung through the air. Thankfully soldiers were there to catch me. As they unhooked me from the rope contraption they yelled, “Mam! Mam! Are you okay?” To which I responded, “NO! Get me out of this thing!”

My husband snapped a picture of my shocked, bruised face, and I vowed never to do that again unless it was a real plane and I HAD to.

There are two different personalities in this world: the methodical researcher and the jumper.

Both possess strengths and weaknesses. However, in the blogging world, you can research blogging to death and tweak your post a thousand times, but if you wait too long trying to make it perfect, you may chicken out. You’ll never jump. I see it happen all the time. We fear that our work is not good enough, and paralysis sets in.

But a blogger must bravely jump every week. At least once. With words crafted and edited, the blogger must say, “Good enough!” Chin tucked to chest. Maybe eyes closed. Count to three, press publish and jump.

Why jump? Why take the risk of less than perfect form and possibly receiving a few bruises in the process? Why blog?

I’m so glad you asked. Here’s 5 reasons:

  • Practice makes better.

My writing has improved immensely from my very first post five years ago. Writing is a craft. It’s an art. It can always improve. Always. Writers must practice.

  • Blogging gives purpose.

It’s hard to practice if you don’t have a reason to write. Maintaining a blog provides motivation and a schedule. It’s your chance to write about what excites you. You are the boss; you’re the expert. One of my writing buddies says, “Find your super power and write about it.”

  • Writers need a platform.

The publishing world gives contracts to those who have a following. They intend to sign the dotted line with an author who’ll bring revenue. Though blogging doesn’t promise a huge platform overnight, it’s a venue to get your message out to the public. A blog provides the opportunity for people all over the world to read your sage advice or advantageous humor. Blogs expand your audience into cyber-space. Aunt Mildred won’t be your only reader.

  • Blogging builds confidence.

When I began writing my first book, (another faith jump) my husband warned, “People will disagree; you must be certain about your words.” Jumping every week has strengthened my resolve, forced me to do my homework, and led me to depend greater on God to lead my writing. As my audience grows, my confidence strengthens even when a few don’t agree with me.

  • Writing isn’t for chickens.

When an editor requests a submission, a writer must craft the very best article or proposal possible, edit it, and then push the send button. It is the scariest thing! I drive myself crazy reading, tweaking, and re-tweaking a submission. Blogging has taught me that at one point I finally have to jump. Blogging has also taught me to trust myself. Through practice of writing and editing weekly, I’ve improved those skills too. I’ve concluded that I only can do my best and trust God with the rest. One of my most successful blog posts felt like my worst when I published it. Despite the desire to keep working on it, time would not allow. And it was my best post yet.

I started blogging because I learned at my first writers’ conference that I had to. I didn’t know what a blog was. Clueless. So clueless. But for me, ignorance was bliss. I simply looked at some of the faculty’s blogs from the conference and followed what I saw. (A-hem, thank you Edie Melson.)

I warn you: it takes more than five minutes to build a blog whether on Blogger or Wordpress. Those people who proclaim such nonsense lie. There is a learning curve. It takes time to design a blog just the way you want it.

It also takes time to write. It requires discipline.

But, if you’ve been called to write, in this day and age, you’ve been called to blog.

Have you taken the jump? What fear did you overcome to start blogging? Or what is holding you back? Let us encourage you. Leave a comment.
